Canker sores affect millions of people; medically speaking this condition is known as Recurrent Aphthous  Stomatitis (RAS) and they are very common. Its been estimated that nearly 20 % of the population are

affected by canker sores, and women are twice as susceptible to have canker sores as men. The exact cause is not known. The canker sores are a small ulcer that affects the mucous membranes inside the mouth usually on the inner cheeks, gums, and occasionally the tongue.  They may occur singly or in severe cases in groups. Before it becomes

visible, the canker sore may produce a tingling or burning sensation. After 6 to 24 hours the ulcer appears as a small white round depression 1/8” to ¼” in diameter that is surrounded by a reddish inflammation. The canker sore is most painful during the first 3 to 4 days, and can take up to ten days or more to heal. Canker sores are known to recur. The canker sores tend to appear when the body has experienced some physical or emotional stress, and current theories point to canker sores being the result of a localized autoimmune disorder. This simply means that the bodies own immune cells attack the cells lining the inside of the mouth. It is believed that certain factors such as food allergies also play a role. Some people avoid chocolate, walnuts, or acidic foods as citric acid, tomatoes and vinegar because they seem to trigger the ulcers. There is nothing that will stop canker sores from recurring, however, there are things that can be done to relieve the Discomfort. Two

cleansing antiseptic solutions you might try are hydrogen peroxide

diluted with water to half strength, and one teaspoon each of salt and baking soda to four ounces of water. Some individuals also receive relief from eating yogurt with active cultures. Canker sores are not known to be contagious, you cannot pass them on when kissing your significant other, and a virus or bacteria do not cause them. Canker sores and cold sores share many same features, but they are not the same. Both are painful and often caused by stress. Cold sores can occur in the mouth as well, and the can be passed from one person to another.

Studies have shown that for some people there is a connection between canker sores and the foods that they eat. These people seem to get canker sores as a result of an allergic reaction to certain foods. The Types of food commonly associated with this allergic reaction include nuts, seafood, chocolate, milk, peanut butter, and wheat products.
