Text Box: FREE RADICALS VS. ANTIOXIDANTS

So what does the term “ Free Radicals “ mean ?? . Free Radicals are described as groups of atoms that has one or more unpaired electrons and are unstable molecules that have a missing electron. Because of this, they end up stealing electrons from healthy cells in our body. Free Radicals are toxic by-products from the food we eat, and other natural metabolic processes that cause oxidation damage to cells and tissues in our body. They are unstable molecules in our body, being naturally produced by the digestion of food. Whether we like it or not, we all have them in our bodies. They are in our system coursing through our bloodstream looking to create mischief. That mischief is stealing electrons from healthy molecules, and this is how they damage other vital tissues in your body. This is the primary reason these free radicals are thought to be a major cause, if not the “ MAJOR CAUSE” of our most common diseases. As a matter of fact, over 60 degenerative diseases known, are recognized as having free radicals as the primary cause of many of these diseases. The presence of these free radicals, derived from oxygen, are very reactive substances that are capable of damaging our cells by what is called “peroxydation”. Free radicals are toxic substances, which must be neutralized in order to avoid cell damage. All of us have them in our bodies, at all times, and they course through our blood stream wreaking havoc our cell membranes, proteins, and even our brain cells. Antioxidants such as vitamins A, E and C are your primary sources. According to recent studies, antioxidant vitamins in produce and other foods may actually represent a modern day “Fountain of Youth”, and eating your fruits and vegetables is without question timely advice. They work by mopping up the free radicals in our system by trapping them, and inhibiting their action. Evidence suggests that vitamins A, C, E , and beta carotene, help protect the brain against damaging free radicals that have been associated with brain cell loss and Alzheimer’s disease, and may reduce some forms of cancer, heart disease, strokes; as well as slowing down the aging process. Now my kids are telling me to eat my Veggies!!!!
